Onnellinen
A moment to unwind in the city.
Located in Arashiyama-Asatsukicho, Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto, Onnellinen serves freshly shaped rice balls, homemade Omi beef hamburg steak, and gluten-free rice flour financiers in a calm riverside setting looking out over the Katsura River.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Overlooking the gentle current of the Katsura River, Onnellinen is widely appreciated for its diverse selection of made-to-order omusubi (rice balls). The menu highlights the simple, natural sweetness of tenderly shaped rice seasoned with salt from Kotohikihama beach. Fillings span a generous spectrum, including sansho pepper kombu, Kishu Nanko umeboshi, simmered Kuroge Wagyu beef, and dining-room exclusives such as soy-cured egg yolk or mentaiko (spicy cod roe) cream cheese. Morning visitors can order breakfast sets pairing their choice of rice balls with miso soup, seasonal small side dishes, and grilled salmon, setting an easy tone for the day beside the water.
At lunchtime, the signature homemade hamburg steak takes centre stage. Prepared with a balanced blend of minced Omi beef and Nagasaki pork, the patty is slow-cooked at a low temperature to lock in its savoury juices. It is served as a meal set accompanied by miso soup, 3 small side dishes, and dessert. Guests can also choose crisp fried young chicken marinated in a house-made yuzu kosho citrus chili sauce and fried in rice oil, or opt for a hearty seasonal soup lunch brimming with local vegetables.
For dessert or an afternoon pause, the cafe bakes gluten-free financiers using domestic rice flour and generous amounts of cultured butter, yielding a crisp exterior and a tender crumb. One house specialty is an affogato featuring a deep-roasted Onnellinen espresso poured over vanilla ice cream, served with a financier for dipping. The drinks program is curated with equal care, encompassing hand-drip single-origin coffees and Scandinavian teas like Soder Blending, renowned for its presence at Nobel Prize banquets.
Furnished with understated Scandinavian pieces and tableware, the quiet interior offers a peaceful retreat. Free on-site parking is available, making the cafe a convenient and restful stop before or after exploring Arashiyama and the Matsunoo-taisha shrine area.
